一个得胃癌晚期的模范公务员老人，在生命的最后时刻所遭遇的种种。当他回到家中时，却听到唯一的儿子和媳妇想利用他的退休金及储蓄，到外面另组小家庭。伤心的渡边望着亡妻的照片老泪纵横。在一位年轻的女部属的帮助下。他打起精神，亲自督促建设社区公园。但所有的功劳却为上司所夺。最后渡边决定在公园里渡过他生命中的最后一刻，以表示他的抗议与愤怒。 导演将人在生命尽头生存意义的思考、对家庭问题的反映、对官僚机构的讽刺浑然融为一体，使人看后精神为之一振。影片中一些小道具的运用则体现了人物内心的境况，这种隐喻平实而生动，丝毫没有晦涩之感。。A film version of a play Fassbinder directed in Hamburg, Clare Booth Luce's "The Women".
